People Friendly Salisbury Suspended

A statement from Wiltshire Council laid blame firmly on the doorstep of Salisbury City Council.

"The decision follows a meeting with Salisbury City Council where they refused to confirm support for the scheme moving forwards. 

Given the lack of explicit support from the city council and the Salisbury BID, Wiltshire Council is unable to continue with the scheme at this time."

Victoria Charleston, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Salisbury reacted:

"I am disappointed that the plans to reduce traffic within our city, improve air quality and give pedestrians priority has been suspended.

I understand however, people’s frustrations and anger at the Conservative Wiltshire Council scheme.  Conservative Salisbury City Council have not given Salisbury the leadership it needs on this issue. People did not feel consulted, nor listened to when the plans were announced over the summer.  The very public Conservative split over this highlights how divisive the scheme has been allowed to become. 

Salisbury Lib Dems surveyed over 13,000 people in the last couple of months and overwhelmingly, the biggest issue for people is traffic on our roads.  We believe it is time to fully listen to what our community wants and have a conversation about our full transport infrastructure.

I hope Wiltshire Council takes the time to reflect on the wishes of Salisbury residents, I hope an improved scheme is reintroduced in the future, and I look forward to seeing our city thrive."
